Shadow periods, honestly
The "shadow" is the stretch when Mercury is moving direct but inside the degrees it will later retrace — before the retrograde it walks the road it is about to walk backwards, after it it re-walks the road it just gave up. Now the honest part. The shadow period is modern practice, not tradition. The electional texts that wrote the retrograde rule restrict the retrograde span and handle the station days with care; the pre- and post-shadow is a twentieth-century extension you will not find in the old sources. Treat it as a taper, not a wall: the days nearest a station are the slow ones, and a contract signed in mid-shadow is a contract signed on an ordinary day.
